Summary

As a duo, Dian Joy and Lucy Wheeler are concerned with social realities in the era of post-truth and artificial intelligence. Through their research, they deliberate on the potential for human agency under systems of exponential control. The proposed installation that results from their research deconstructs and re-simulates the machine learning processes that create digital echo chambers. This dramatised digital ecosystem exposes the audience to algorithmic behaviours, offering them a unique insight into their place within the digital cosmos of daily life.

Their interactive artwork utilises neural networks as drivers for a digital simulation. The work invites the audience to participate by contributing to the simulation in real time. By recreating the ways algorithms consume and aggregate data, they have created the illusion of life in something that is inherently un-alive, yet mimics the conditions of a behavioural ecosystem. In that respect, the work demonstrates how testimonies, ideas, and content take on a life of their own in the pursuit of becoming objective or collective truths. Their call to action is to democratise and demystify technology, allowing the audience to reflect on their digital footprint, and provide better awareness of how we navigate digital spaces in the era of algorithmization and online surveillance.
