Commissioned in collaboration with York Museums Trust and Invisible Dust, The Pollinarium was a project by Loop.pH, a spatial laboratory that creates art installations around the world with an ecological and environmental theme.
Manifesting as a huge inflatable structure based in the Artists Garden behind York Art Gallery, The Pollinarium was a family-friendly installation that invited members of the public to step inside the spectacular domain of the humble bumble bee. The immersive experience aimed to enhance our perception of the vital role that pollinating insects play in sustaining human life on earth, by helping us see, hear, and feel our natural environment in new and enriched ways.
The project was developed with specialist support from St Nicks Centre for Nature and Green Living, who devised and managed a full programme of summer events that enlivened and enriched the themes of the project, culminating in the construction of the archilace and Plant Pavilion that formed the entry into the Pollinarium
“It is a fascinating project and we hope visitors will enjoy seeing it develop over the Summer and then transform into an innovative and immersive experience in time for the much anticipated York Mediale.”

Exhibition Programme Officer, York Museums Trust
“Education is such an important part of York Mediale, and the Loop.pH team are amongst the best in the world at creating beautiful structures with a strong environmental message that can be understood by young and old alike. The wooden pavilion and Archilace are both beautiful structures that will entice people in for a look and to find out more, and the St Nick’s team will be on hand at events throughout the summer.”
