Castle Car Park to be animated with free music and dance
On Sunday 29 September, York Dance Space will transform Castle Car Park with music, animation and dance into an immersive performance space open to all.
iMOVE is the first of a trio of art commissions to be presented as part of City of York Council’s consultation on Castle Gateway. Using art to reference the past whilst looking to the future of the iconic city centre site, iMOVE is a free outdoor dance performance incorporating animation and sound, performed by young people from across York.
The project is funded through Leeds City Region Business Rates Pool, which allows local authorities to retain growth in business rates for local investment. Supported by City of York Council and York Mediale.
Over the past year, York Dance Space has been delivering short programmes of activity in collaboration with Pilot Theatre. Their mission: give young people a space to be creative, play and try new things in the city.
“The Castle Gateway commission has allowed us to continue this work and collaborate with other organisations in the city. iMove, like all our projects, is fully inclusive and we have ensured that young people’s voices remain at the heart of the sessions. Their stories, opinions and dreams have been a source of inspiration for the performative elements of the piece and an interesting perspective on re-imagining and developing the Castle Gateway area from a young person’s perspective.”
Drew Wintie-Hawkins
Co-Artistic Director of York Dance Space
York Dance Space, York Theatre Royal and York Explore Libraries and Archives have opened up creative spaces to young, offering innovative ways of working with tech and movement and collaborate with professionals working in these areas.
Featuring dancers from ten of York’s Secondary schools, the performance will also feature musicians from the 9-Bit Orchestra – an innovative project that encourages participants to get stuck into tech tinkering, circuit bending and coding to create lots of noise, facilitated by York Explore.
The performance on 29 September will be where the pieces of the iMOVE puzzle come together. As an audience member you will be invited into the performance space and be immersed in music, dance and animation with some of York’s most famous heritage sites as the backdrop.
