Collaborations

Day 4 of filming The One Percent

So far, the group have written and recorded a spoken word poem  in masterclasses with Kritikal Powers, based on the journey of Sam, a young care leaver. Now the team behind the poem have started visualising the characters journey through a film production with Inspired Youth that will bring the words to life.

Day 4 invited first Jade, then Shelly to play their part of Sam’s story in the film. Jade acted out scenes in various locations in which Sam is taking positive steps in her life and taking on the challenge of independent living with everything she has. Jade acted with confidence and stepped up to the challenge shooting in public spaces with Liam Powers and Tash Rajan on the lens.

Jade smiles as Kritikal Powers captures footage for the film alongside production support Tash Rajan. Jade took on the pressure well and enjoyed her performance on the production.

Next to perform as Sam was Shelly who featured in various shots in various locations starting with a reflective image of her gazing over York City with the Minster in the distance. Shelly came across genuine and authentic working with confidence in front of the camera.

Jade and Shelly play an older Sam setting out into the world on her own for the first time. This means taking on responsibilities for independent living, budgeting and paying bills including Council Tax.

Shelly is captured in a positive portrait to highlight that Sam and care leavers like her are people who have been on a journey and faced difficulties in life, but who is determined and positive about her future.

The One Percent will be showcased as part of York Mediale on 2 October 2018.

The project is a co-production driven by young people in partnership with Inspired Youth, York Mediale and Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
